FreeStyle Lite Blood Glucose Monitoring System Diabetic Meter Kit Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)While I was not thrilled to be diagnosed with gestational diabetes, I was very happy that my doctor chose this glucose monitor for me! While this is the only monitor I've used, type 1 runs in my family and I've watched my father go through various glucometers over the years and have since compared mine to his current glucometers. I also participate on forums for women with gd and have heard a lot of moaning and gnashing of teeth over their sub-par monitors. I thus feel like I can say this is an excellent glucometer, despite it being my only personal experience.
Upon opening the package I was shocked at how tiny this glucometer is! It is about the same size of an egg, so the "lite" label definitely applies. It was extremely simple to understand and begin use, requiring virtually no set up or coding. The black case it comes in is discreet and would easily fit in even the smallest of purses. The zippered pocket inside the case is convenient for extra lancets. It also has a light which makes it easy to use in the dark or in a car at night, this feature has come in useful more than once. First it illuminates the testing strip area so you can see where the strip is, and once the strip registers contact with your blood it lights up the LCD screen that will display your reading.
The lancet pen that came with it is also easy to use, and I really appreciate the settings of 1-4, which adjusts how deep the lancet pierces your skin. For me, a setting of 1 - 2 has always been enough as it takes the teeniest drop of blood for this glucometer work. It also means that the pain is virtually non-existent when it comes to poking my own finger. I have not had a defective testing strip yet, and I've been using this glucometer 6 times a day for two months now. Since I have to record & report all my glucose readings, it's very handy that this glucometer has a memory that stores your readings (with the date & time, which I didn't even have to program) for quite some time. Whoever designed this glucometer seems to have thought of everything.
After reading so much about other gestational diabetics having glucometer issues (defective strips, recalls, drastically incorrect readings, bulky glucometers, etc), as well as seeing my father's sometimes lacking glucometers, I have to highly recommend this model. My first experience with a glucometer has been a great one. I would have had no idea which one to pick, there are so many, so I was very grateful when my doctor picked this one out for me and it turned out to be so simple and easy to use. Don't let the size or "lite" label fool you, this is a hardy little machine.
